Level 4, Intermediate, Post 3, 'Theme Free Post'

In this opportunity I will talk about one of my favourite books, “Demian” by Hermann Hesse.

This is a novel of the philosophical and developmental genre and it tell us about the protagonist development from child to adult. A path were Emil Sinclair tries to achieve self-fulfillment defining who he is, an internal journey trying to accept all the parts that make him, including the darkest ones.

The story begins when he’s a child and discovers a dark world in which he was never exposed to due to his familiar environment, a world of things that are not socially accepted filled with things we are ashamed of and hide from others. At the beginning Sinclair explore this dark world until Demian arrives, a slightly older boy who end ups being a guide that little by little Will give him keys to reach this fulfillment. Thanks to his adventures with Demian Emil learns about the idea of “Abraxas”, which is a God that embodies both good and evil.

Herman Hesse was heavily influenced by Carl Jung’s analytic psychology, so to understand this even more i read al little about the majors Jungian archetypes.

One of the reasons why i like it so much it’s because all the things i can learn, including philosophy, and the attention you have to put in order to catch up details and symbolism.
